in the morning. mitt romney has two, plus the stop in wisconsin. and just by looking at the candidate's itineraries, it tells you b a lot about just how important they think this state is. it's going to be an all-out fight for ohio's 18 electoral votes. it's worth repeating. no republican has ever won the presidency without ohio. just this morning, there was a better than expected jobs report. while the unemployment rate picked up to 7.9%, 171,000 jobs were created. that beats estimates by a strong margin. now, here in ohio, the unemployment rate is lower than the national average. it is 7%. late yesterday, i visited both the romney and obama campaign headquarters in columbus. when i asked people why they're giving their time and what people they're talking to are telling them, the economy is still the central issue in this campaign. >> i think the economy is not doing well and i think romney is the guy that can turn it around, gets back on track, get things going again for starters and i'm worried about the budgets, the deficits. all my kids are in their 30s and we need the bubbling

since hurricane sandy hit. mitt romney has an event starting any minute now in roanoke, virginia. and we'll wait to see today's tone on the campaign trail, but it's been noticeably softer from romney since the storm. now, we continue to see absolutely devastating pictures from sandy. 74 people are now dead. 5 million still without power. this morning, president obama was briefed again on the situation by fema officials. yesterday, he spent four hours touring the damage and meeting with people in new jersey. in an emotional moment, a marina owner came to him in tears. he promised her she's going to get the help she needs. >> we are with here for you. and we will not forget. we will follow up to make sure that you get all the help that you need until you've rebuilt. >> well, it's unprecedented timing. this is all happening just five days before the election. the latest round of nbc news wall street journal polls show the president leading in iowa, wisconsin, and new hampshire. but it is still very close. let me bring in washington post columnist dana millbank and molly ball. good morning.

the obama and romney campaigns here in ohio since friday following both since they barn stormed this state and the country in a last frantic final push. can you believe it's the final full day? well, president obama visiting three states that will make up his firewall today. wisconsin, here in ohio and iowa. mitt romney just wrapped up a florida. now, he's headed to virginia and then back here to ohio. he'll end his day in new hampshire. polls show this race is extremely close. a dead heat nationally. very close in the battleground states. perhaps a very slight advantage for president obama. he seems to have a little bit of momentum going into the final day. well, democrats point to long lines for early voting as a sign of enthusiasm, but republicans say their crowds are bigger and the obama magic from 2008 has warn off. the president's closing argument, a fair shot for everyone and a chance to do even better. >> we've made real progress these past four years, but here's the thing, ohio. we know we've got more work to do. that's why we're here today. >> but mitt romney says four years unde

the president in 2008 overwhelmingly backed mitt romney this time around. but the looming fiscal cliff is bringing both sides together. the president met with a dozen corporate leaders at the white house on wednesday. some ideas offered up by observers to smooth out differences? well, first, don't pretend the problem between washington and wall street does not exist. perhaps a weekend retreat with both sides, financial and policy gurus. and finally criminally prosecute those on wall street who caused the financial crisis. joining me now is the man behind those ideas. william cohen is also the author of "money and power: how goldman sachs came to rule the world." let's say he does bring those ideas to bear. will business accept them? will they like them? >> look, i understand there's a lot of animosity out there towards wall street and justifiably so. if it weren't for wall street chances are pretty good we wouldn't have gotten into the financial problems of 2007 and 2008. the time for the behavior and figuring out what they should have done is over. the market has been down nearly ever

. >> president obama, senator, beat mitt romney by 11 points among women. where does the relationship, you think, between the republican party and women stand? and do you think having more women in the senate will change that dynamic and the way those policies are looked at? >> i think that republicans need to have some takeaways from this election, as do democrats. i think everyone got the message that we want to get things done. i think that women have the capability to contribute to that, but i also think that republicans are going to have to show that there is a caring about the issues that face women. we know the issues that are faced by women, for instance, whose kids can't get job after they graduate from college so they're back home, or they're working two jobs to be able to support their children. those are the economic issues that we've talked about but not in maybe the terms that show that we know how hard it is, that we care very much that there is an economic opportunity, and that's what our focus should be. that's where our strong suit is. >> it's never easy to be a freshman as a m

that, you know, that was the argument that mitt romney made, and he lost. and keep in mind, it's not just that president obama won, but the exit polls showed that half of the folks who voted for governor romney agreed with obama, that taxes on the high-income folks had to go up. so the challenge on the republican side, and it is tough, is folks like kevin mccarthy did get elected. and in his district, his no-tax pledge worked for him. these guys are in a very tough spot because they know at the end of the day they're going to have to raise these taxes. but doing so will cause an immense amount of political pain. that's why in my view, it's probably likely that we won't get a deal before january 1st. but on january 3rd, the senate sends a bill over. where now we're voting on a bill to lower taxes. the norquist pledge becomes irrelevant. in fact, they comply with the norquist pledge by voting for a bill that would provide tax relief for 98% of americans. so i just think this is a very difficult political situation on the republican side. you know, the speaker clearly knows that r

% of the people did vote for mr. romney and i think what he has to come across at is a very pragmatic individual. that's what americans, i tell you, in pennsylvania that's what we want is a pragmatic approach. step aside from the ideology. when 60% of the budget has to do with entitlements, you know it has to be addressed. then on the other hand, when you have seen the tax rates for the top 1% in the last 50 years has gone down 40%, by the other 99% overall tax rates have remained essentially saying you understand where at least for the first traurj of tax revenues we have to go, but the end of the day we need everyone to do a shared sacrifice and i hope this president with mr. boehner stays the course. we know the bipartisan principle approach that must be done. it is going to take both spending reductions, entitlement reform, and tax quite frankly revenue increases. >> chip, i was also thinking this weekend as i was looking at the numbers this morning about how well they did on black friday and what they're expecting on cyber monday today that it does seem to give the impression that people ar
